Two elderly residents died in a house fire Sunday morning on Harmon Road in Wheaton, according to Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Service (MCFRS).
Firefighters were dispatched to the home near Georgia Avenue and Plyers Mill Road, where they found heavy fire on the second floor of the split-level single-family house extending through the roof.
Crews quickly began attacking the fire while simultaneously searching the residence. Despite difficult conditions, including a partial roof collapse, firefighters were able to bring the blaze under control.
Two elderly occupants of the home were pronounced dead at the scene. One firefighter sustained minor burn injuries during the response and was transported to MedStar for evaluation and treatment.
“This is a heartbreaking loss for the family, friends, and community,” MCFRS shared on social media, asking the public to keep the victims’ loved ones, as well as the responding firefighters and emergency personnel, in their thoughts. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
