Police Arrest Man Accused Of Causing Life-Threatening Head Injuries With Umbrella

A Takoma Park man has been arrested after police say he struck another man in the head with an umbrella during an argument, leaving the victim with life-threatening injuries.

According to the Takoma Park Police Department, officers responded to the 1100 block of University Boulevard around 11:15pm on July 8 for a reported assault involving an adult male with severe injuries.

Officers gathered witness statements at the scene and quickly located several individuals matching the descriptions provided. Following the investigation, police identified and arrested Julio Cesar Martinez Vasquez, 39, of Takoma Park.

According to investigators, Vasquez told police that an argument with the victim escalated after the victim allegedly displayed a knife. Vasquez allegedly struck the victim in the head with an umbrella. Detectives recovered evidence related to the incident.

The victim was transported to a local hospital with severe head injuries. Police said Vasquez was taken to the Takoma Park Police Department for processing but experienced a medical issue while in custody and was transported to a local hospital for evaluation. After being medically cleared, he was taken to the Montgomery County Central Processing Unit, where he was charged with first- and second-degree assault.
