Pizza Monkey will take over the longtime home of Gilly’s Craft Beer & Fine Wine at 2009 Chapman Ave. in Rockville.
Gilly’s closed in October after nearly two decades in business, earning a loyal following as one of Rockville’s favorite destinations for craft beer, wine, sandwiches, and community gatherings.
Pizza Monkey plans to preserve much of what made Gilly’s special by continuing to offer an extensive craft beer and wine selection while introducing its Detroit-style pizza. The menu is also expected to include wings, salads, and a small selection of subs, replacing the sandwiches that were previously served at Gilly’s.
Pizza Monkey first launched in early 2024 inside the Washington Rockville Elks Lodge #15 at 5 Taft Ct. before relocating to its current home at 330 N. Stonestreet Ave., where it operates out of Corned Beef King. The restaurant will continue serving customers from its current location until the new Chapman Avenue restaurant is ready to open.
Owner Jason Hubbarth said Pizza Monkey is targeting a September opening at the new location. Hubbarth, who earned the childhood nickname “Monkey Boy,” has been making Detroit-style pizza for friends and family for more than a decade. Inspired by Buddy’s Pizza, widely recognized as the birthplace of Detroit-style pizza, he eventually decided to turn that passion into a business and share it with the Rockville community.
The news of Pizza Monkey relocating to the former Gilly’s location was first reported by MoCo Nights.
