Dan Hellie, a graduate of Col. Zadok Magruder High School, has been named the play-by-play announcer for the Washington Commanders’ preseason television broadcasts.
Hellie, who currently works with UFC on Fox, will be joined in the booth by Washington legends Brian Mitchell and John Riggins, who will provide color commentary. Bryan Colbert will serve as the sideline reporter.
A 1993 graduate of Magruder, Hellie has strong Montgomery County ties. He was inducted into the Magruder Athletic Hall of Fame in 2012 and returned to his alma mater to deliver the school’s commencement address in 2008.
Hellie brings more than two decades of NFL coverage experience to the role. He previously served as a host on NFL Network’s Total Access and was sports director at NBC4 Washington, where he won two Emmy Awards, including one for Best Sports Anchor.
During his time at NBC Washington, Hellie covered some of the biggest events in sports, including multiple Super Bowls, the NCAA Final Four, PGA Tour events, the Stanley Cup, the NBA Playoffs and Major League Baseball. He also spent a month in London covering the 2012 Summer Olympics.
The Commanders’ preseason broadcasts will pair Hellie’s extensive national and local broadcasting experience with the insight of two of the franchise’s all-time greats in Mitchell and Riggins.
