Monumental Sports & Entertainment and Capital One have announced a 20-year extension of the naming rights agreement for Capital One Arena, while also unveiling new renderings and details of the more than $1 billion transformation currently underway in downtown Washington, D.C.
The agreement will keep the Capital One name on the arena for another two decades as Monumental prepares to complete the venue’s major redevelopment ahead of the 2027-28 NBA and NHL seasons.
Along with the naming rights announcement, Monumental released new renderings offering a look at the arena’s redesigned exterior and planned upgrades to the District Level, formerly the 100 Level, and Terrace Level, formerly the 400 Level. Those areas are expected to debut ahead of the 2027 season.
The transformed arena will remain home to the Washington Capitals, Washington Wizards and Georgetown men’s basketball, while also hosting select Washington Mystics games, concerts and other events. Monumental expects approximately 250 events to take place at the arena annually once the project is completed.
The venue is also scheduled to host the 2027 NCAA Division I Men’s Ice Hockey Championship, better known as the Frozen Four, and the 2028 NCAA Division I Women’s Basketball Regional featuring Sweet 16 and Elite Eight games.
Among the planned improvements are redesigned concourses, expanded entrances, new gathering spaces, upgraded food and beverage offerings and improved connections between levels. One of the more notable additions will be the “Visibowl,” which Monumental describes as a first-of-its-kind feature providing direct sightlines into the arena bowl from the concourse.
The District Level will feature four distinct districts along with new social areas and Center Stage Bars. On the Terrace Level, a new food hall will span the entire length of the F Street side of the building. Capital One cardholders will also receive an expanded dedicated entrance on F Street beginning in fall 2027. Unlike the current cardholder entrance benefit, which is available for Capitals and Wizards games, the new entrance will be available during all events at the arena. Additional cardholder discounts and benefits are also planned.
The arena transformation is being completed through a partnership between Monumental and the District of Columbia. Phase Two of construction is currently underway, with the full project remaining on schedule for completion before the start of the 2027-28 Capitals and Wizards seasons.
