A 55-year-old Takoma Park man has been arrested and charged with attempted first-degree murder following an assault that left a 47-year-old man critically injured, according to the Takoma Park Police Department.
Police Chief Antonio DeVaul announced the arrest of Nebiyu Teklu G. Michael, 55, of Takoma Park. Michael has been charged with attempted first-degree murder, first-degree assault, second-degree assault and reckless endangerment.
On August 10 at approximately 11:04am, Takoma Park police officers responded to the intersection of Houston Avenue and Roanoke Avenue for a report of an assault in progress. According to police, preliminary information indicated that a motor vehicle collision had occurred and one of the individuals involved was subsequently assaulted with a cutting instrument.
Officers arrived and located the 47-year-old victim near his vehicle suffering from severe lacerations to his head and neck. Officers began life-saving measures, packing the victim’s wounds with gauze and applying pressure to control the bleeding until Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Service personnel arrived.
The victim was transported to a local trauma center in critical condition, where he was stabilized and underwent emergency surgery. Officers secured the scene and conducted a neighborhood canvass while detectives with the department’s Criminal Investigation Division continued investigating.
The following day, August 11, at approximately 2pm, detectives conducting follow-up investigative efforts learned that the suspect and his vehicle had returned to his residence. According to police, the suspect was reportedly preparing to collect his belongings and leave the area.
Takoma Park detectives coordinated with the Montgomery County Police Department’s 3rd District Special Assignment Team to conduct surveillance of the suspect and vehicle. Investigators subsequently observed the suspect operating the vehicle.
Members of both departments conducted a coordinated vehicle block to prevent the suspect from fleeing, and he was taken into custody without incident. Michael was transported to the Takoma Park Police Department, where detectives interviewed him. Police subsequently obtained and executed a search and seizure warrant for the suspect’s vehicle and recovered what they described as items of evidentiary value.
Michael was transported to the Montgomery County Central Processing Unit and charged. The investigation remains ongoing. A mugshot of the suspect was not provided.
