Pizza Monkey will close its current Rockville location at 330 N. Stonestreet Avenue on Monday, August 31, as the restaurant prepares to relocate to the former Gilly’s Craft Beer & Fine Wine space at 2009 Chapman Avenue.
The restaurant previously announced plans to take over the longtime Gilly’s location, with owner Jason Hubbarth targeting a September opening. An exact opening date for the new location has not yet been announced.
Gilly’s closed in October after nearly two decades in business. Pizza Monkey plans to preserve part of the former shop’s identity by offering an extensive craft beer and wine selection alongside its Detroit-style pizza. The menu is also expected to feature wings, salads and a small selection of subs.
Pizza Monkey launched in early 2024 inside the Washington Rockville Elks Lodge #15 at 5 Taft Court before relocating to Stonestreet Avenue, where it has operated out of Corned Beef King.
Hubbarth has been making Detroit-style pizza for friends and family for more than a decade and was inspired by Buddy’s Pizza, widely recognized as the birthplace of Detroit-style pizza. The upcoming Chapman Avenue location will give Pizza Monkey a new permanent home while continuing the beer and wine component that helped make Gilly’s a longtime Rockville destination.
