The Washington Spirit fell 3-0 to Boston Legacy FC at Audi Field on Sunday, September 13, surrendering three late goals after keeping the match scoreless through 80 minutes.
Washington created early opportunities through Trinity Rodman and Rosemonde Kouassi but was unable to break through against Boston goalkeeper Casey Murphy. Defender Gabby Carle helped keep Boston off the scoreboard with a last-second intervention on a first-half free kick.
Boston gained more control of possession after halftime, with Spirit goalkeeper Sandy MacIver making several key saves to keep Washington in the match. The breakthrough came in the 81st minute, when Aïssata Traoré battled through multiple tackles and scored from the top of the box.
Rodman had an opportunity to equalize in the 88th minute, but Murphy denied her attempt. Boston then added two goals in stoppage time, both from Amanda Gutierres. The first came from distance with MacIver off her line, followed by a finish off a cross from Lilly Reale.
The Spirit will next travel to face Chicago Stars FC on Sunday, September 20. Kickoff is scheduled for 5pm, with the match airing on ESPN.
