The Washington Commanders shocked the defending Super Bowl champion Seattle Seahawks on Sunday afternoon, defeating Seattle 33-31 at Northwest Stadium for their first victory of the season.
Washington entered the game 0-2 and without starting quarterback Jayden Daniels, who suffered a dislocated elbow in last week’s loss to Dallas. Marcus Mariota started in his place and threw three touchdown passes without an interception, completing 19 of 31 passes for 183 yards.
The loss snapped Seattle’s franchise-record 12-game winning streak, which dated back to November 2025 and included the Seahawks’ run to last season’s Super Bowl championship. Seattle fell to 2-1, while Washington improved to 1-2. Below are some fun facts and notable performances from Washington’s win:
• Running back Rachaad White recorded his first touchdown reception of the season and the 12th of his career. It was his first receiving touchdown since Week 15 of the 2024 season.
• Cornerback Amik Robertson recorded multiple passes defensed for the second consecutive game, the first time he has accomplished that in his career.
• Rookie kicker Drew Stevens connected on a career-long 57-yard field goal just before halftime. According to TruMedia, the kick is the longest field goal ever made by a Washington kicker during his rookie season. The only other Washington rookie to make a field goal of at least 50 yards was James Tuthill, who connected from 53 yards in Week 7 of the 2002 season.
• Mariota threw three touchdown passes in a game for the first time since Week 8 of the 2022 season.
• Washington recorded at least two takeaways in a game for the first time since Week 8 of the 2025 season. The Commanders ultimately finished with three takeaways while committing no turnovers themselves.
One of those turnovers produced the biggest play of the afternoon. With Washington leading 27-24 and just over four minutes remaining, Kain Medrano intercepted Sam Darnold and returned it 50 yards for a touchdown, extending the Commanders’ lead to 33-24. Seattle answered with a touchdown to make it 33-31, but Washington was able to run out the remaining clock.
Seattle actually outgained Washington 437-258, with Darnold throwing for 379 yards and four touchdowns, but the Seahawks’ three turnovers proved costly. The Commanders will now travel to London to face the Indianapolis Colts on Sunday, October 4 at 9:30am ET.
