Poolesville and Clarksburg high schools issued a joint message following what administrators described as a “serious incident” after Monday evening’s girls’ flag football game at Poolesville High School.
According to the message, disrespectful behavior involving students and adults escalated in the parking lot following the game. Administrators said there was taunting and arguing before a physical altercation occurred, resulting in an adult being transported to the hospital for treatment. Police were called to the school and responded to the scene.
Administrators from both schools said an investigation remains ongoing and cautioned against drawing conclusions about individual responsibility before it is completed. Consequences will be assigned where appropriate in accordance with the MCPS Student Code of Conduct and MCPS Athletics expectations.
“This is not how we expect members of either of our school communities, students and adults alike, to represent themselves, their schools or MCPS athletics,” the joint message stated.
The schools emphasized that athletic competition can be spirited and emotional but said respect is expected from student-athletes, students, coaches, families and spectators both during and after games.
The message was signed by Poolesville High School Principal Mark Carothers and Clarksburg High School Principal Anita O’Neill.
