MCPS High School Football Week 9 Preview & Predictions

Thursday Games 10/31

BCC at Paint Branch
BCC (6-2) faces a daunting challenge against Paint Branch (7-1) in this Halloween showdown between two 4A North Region contenders. With the top seed already in hand, Paint Branch has little at stake, but the Panthers are riding high and eager to continue their revenge tour, seeking payback against the team that ended their postseason last year. Coming off a statement win over Blair, the Panthers are firing on all cylinders with Alijah Bah and Makai Miles leading an explosive offense. BCC, on the other hand, has stumbled in recent weeks despite a victory over Whitman, and they’ll need a monumental effort to contain PB’s high-octane attack. Expect PB to dominate both sides of the ball, shutting down the Barons’ ground game and showing why they’re the team to beat. Prediction: Paint Branch 37, BCC 13

Springbrook at Whitman
Springbrook (5-3) clashes with Whitman (4-4) in what could be a tightly contested game, as both teams chase their first winning season in years. Although Springbrook’s overtime win over Kennedy raises some concerns, they still possess enough firepower to keep things competitive. Whitman, however, has momentum on their side and is well-positioned to capitalize on their recent successes. A close game, but Whitman’s edge in confidence and home-field advantage should see them through. Prediction: Whitman 28, Springbrook 13

Northwest at Einstein
Northwest (6-2) meets a rejuvenated but overmatched Einstein (3-5). After a string of wins over weaker opponents, the Titans are back in reality as they take on a superior team in the Jaguars. Expect Northwest to assert dominance early and secure an easy victory. Prediction: Northwest 43, Einstein 6

Friday Games 11/1

Blair at Blake

With matching 6-2 records, Blair and Blake promise a thrilling contest in Cloverly. Blake’s narrow loss to Paint Branch suggests they can hang with the best, but Blair’s more rigorous schedule and wins over tough opponents (BCC, Walter Johnson, and Seneca Valley) make them the favorite. While Blake seeks a statement victory, Blair’s depth and resilience give them the upper hand. Prediction: Blair 31, Blake 21

Walter Johnson at Churchill
This rivalry game could be a high-scoring shootout, but given both teams’ solid defensive units, expect a more controlled battle. Churchill’s (4-4) resurgence after a rocky start has them better poised to edge out WJ (4-4), who has struggled against top teams recently. With QB Vasi Hallas primed for a standout performance, Churchill looks set to take the win in a hard-fought contest. Prediction: Churchill 35, WJ 22

Magruder at Seneca Valley
Seneca Valley (5-3) has had a well-aligned season and is on track to finish strong after an impressive win over Damascus. Magruder (4-4) won’t make it easy, but the Eagles should manage to grind out another win in what could be a low-scoring, run-heavy game. Prediction: Seneca Valley 18, Magruder 8

Damascus at Wootton
In a surprising shift from past seasons, Damascus (5-3) is in a vulnerable position as they face a Wootton (4-4) team that could potentially capitalize on the Hornets’ inconsistencies. Damascus should still have enough depth to avoid an upset, but the margin will be close. Prediction: Damascus 21, Wootton 6

Gaithersburg at Richard Montgomery
With both teams at 2-6, this matchup determines who earns the more favorable draw next week. Gaithersburg is coming off a morale-boosting win over Rockville, while RM’s struggles continue. Expect Gburg to come out on top. Prediction: Gaithersburg 28, Richard Montgomery 7

Kennedy at Wheaton
Wheaton (2-6) faces a Kennedy (1-7) team that showed grit by pushing Springbrook to OT. Provided Wheaton’s lineup is healthy, they should have the edge here, though it may be a closer game than anticipated. Prediction: Wheaton 22, Kennedy 12

Rockville at Northwood
Rockville’s (5-3) shocking loss to Gaithersburg last week will fuel them as they attempt to reestablish momentum against a struggling Northwood (1-7) squad. Expect the Rams to dominate and get back in the win column. Prediction: Rockville 48, Northwood 7

Poolesville at Watkins Mill
The “Anti-Game of the Year” between two 0-8 teams promises to crown a victor. With Poolesville narrowly winning this matchup last year, it’s Watkins Mill’s turn to break their drought. Prediction: Watkins Mill 20, Poolesville 17

Jefferson (WV) at Clarksburg
Jefferson (5-3) brings an impressive record into this matchup, having lost only to teams with outstanding records. Clarksburg (4-4) has strung together a solid win streak but is unlikely to be a match for Jefferson’s high-caliber play. Prediction: Jefferson 38, Clarksburg 13
