CBS Sports Releases ‘New Head Coach Rankings’ With Commanders Dan Quinn Ranked 1st

CBS Sports and writer Cody Benjamin, who has covered the NFL for the network since 2017, have released their first-year (with their team) Head Coach rankings. Dan Quinn, who is in his first year as head coach of the Washington Commanders, is ranked 1st on the list.

8. Dave Canales (Carolina Panthers). 1-7, -147 point differential (32nd in NFL).

7. Brian Callahan (Tennessee Titans) 1-6, -76 point differential (31st in NFL).

6. Antonio Pierce (Las Vegas Raiders) 2-6, -66 point differential (29th in NFL).

5. Jerod Mayo (New England Patriots) 2-6, -73 point differential (30th in NFL).

4. Mike McDonald (Seattle Seahawks) 4-4, -5 point differential (18th in NFL).

3. Raheem Morris (Atlanta Falcons) 5-3, -1 point differential (17th in NFL).

2. Jim Harbaugh (Los Angeles Chargers) 4-4, +41 point differential (10th in NFL).

1. Dan Quinn (Washington Commanders) 6-2, +69 point differential (2nd in NFL).

Dan Quinn and his coaching staff have helped the Commanders win more games less than half way through this season than they won all of last year (4-13).  Rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels and the Washington offense has impressed, with the defense improving as the year has continued.

Benjamin writes, “There’s little doubt that rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels is the biggest reason Washington is a surprise leader in the NFC East, much like C.J. Stroud single-handedly elevated everyone’s stock with the Houston Texans in 2023. Still, Quinn outfitted his young signal-caller with a perfect coordinator in Kliff Kingsbury, and the head coach’s veteran defense has quietly beaten up on inferior foes along the way. For an aging retread whose hire felt curiously uninspired, Quinn has exceeded all expectations at the halfway point, infusing Washington’s locker room and fan base with not only a been-there attitude but newfound hope.

The Washington Commanders play the New York Giants on Sunday for the second time this season. They beat the Giants, now 2-6, 21-18 back on September 15th in a game that saw the Commanders 21 points come from seven field goals.
