Kennedy High School in ‘Secure’ Status Following Report of Gun

12:54pm Update: Officers are clearing the school and @MCPS has changed Kennedy HS to a Hold status as officers wrap up.

The Montgomery County Police Department (MCPD) shared at 12:15pm that Kennedy High School in Silver Spring was placed on ‘Hold’ status after a report of a firearm. According to policed no weapon was seen upon investigation.

A 12:17 update by MCPD states that MCPS has changed the status of the school from ‘Hold’ to ‘Secure. An update will be provided when additional, verified information becomes available.

Per MCPS: Previously, “Shelter” was used as a catch-all for various conditions (weather, medical emergency, police activity, etc.). That was a broad approach; now, the new language splits and clarifies those responses:

    • Hold: To be used to keep hallways clear during instances, such as a medical emergency or a hazard in a hallway, while classroom activities continue normally.
    • Secure: To be used during external threats, such as police activity near the school. Students and staff are brought inside the building and external doors are locked, while normal activities continue inside the school building
