Marathon Deli Aims For October Expansion Into Montgomery County

Marathon Deli, a College Park institution beloved for its authentic Greek food and deli classics, is one step closer to expanding into Montgomery County. A representative from the College Park location shared that the restaurant hopes to open in about three weeks, likely in October.

Back in June 2023, we reported that Marathon Deli had signed on to open a new spot at the Crossroads at Kensington shopping center, located at the corner of Connecticut Avenue and Plyers Mill Road. The restaurant has its hearing with Montgomery County’s Alcohol Beverage Services (ABS) scheduled for October 2nd.

Marathon Deli has been serving the College Park community since 1972, offering Greek specialties such as gyros, souvlaki, spanakopita, and baklava, alongside an extensive menu of subs, pizzas, and their famous fries topped with “Marathon sauce.”

The business is led by owner and chef George Soldatos, who hails from Lefkada, Greece, along with his wife Maria and their son Peter,  keeping the deli a true family-run operation. Over the years, Marathon Deli has become a staple for University of Maryland students and locals alike, earning a reputation for quality, affordability, and a welcoming atmosphere.

Even after relocating just around the corner from its original College Park spot due to redevelopment, the deli has continued to thrive. The upcoming Kensington opening marks the first time the Marathon Deli brand will operate outside of College Park, bringing a new chapter in its 50+ year history.
