MCPS Monitoring Forecast Ahead of Possible Wintry Mix on Tuesday

Update: MCPS will operate on a two hour delay on Tuesday, 12/2/25.

Montgomery County Public Schools says it is closely monitoring weather conditions as a mix of freezing rain, light snow, and rain is expected to move into the region late Monday night into Tuesday morning. In an update shared Monday evening, the school system noted that while early predictions call for slick conditions early in the day, the system currently expects to operate on a normal schedule for Tuesday, December 2.

According to MCPS, a brief period of freezing rain and possibly some snow could impact the morning commute before temperatures rise and precipitation transitions to rain by mid-morning. Because of the uncertainty, officials emphasized that it is still too early to make any final decisions regarding delays or closures.

MCPS stated that snow-response and school-based teams are on alert and prepared to act if conditions change. “We will continue to monitor and, if necessary, make a different decision early Tuesday morning, but right now we expect to proceed with a full school day (and all activities) tomorrow,” the message said.

The district also highlighted the challenge of making weather decisions across a geographically large county. Covering roughly 500 square miles, MCPS frequently encounters “microclimates,” where one part of the county may be clear and dry while another experiences icy or snowy conditions. Officials thanked families for their understanding as crews assess road and sidewalk conditions throughout the night and early morning.

MCPS advised the community to stay attentive to updates as the school system continues to monitor the storm. “We’ll keep watching the skies,” the message concluded, urging students, staff, and families to stay prepared and stay warm. MoCoSnow predictions can be seen here.
