Strong Winds Trigger Multiple Tree, Wire, and Brush Fire Incidents Across Montgomery County

Several wind-related incidents were reported across Montgomery County Monday afternoon as strong gusts continued to impact the region.

A Wind Advisory remains in effect until 1 a.m. Tuesday, with west winds of 20 to 30 mph and gusts reaching up to 55 mph. Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Services (MCFRS) responded to numerous calls involving downed trees, fallen power lines, brush fires, and road closures throughout the afternoon.

At 1:39 p.m., crews were dispatched to Jerusalem Road and Jerusalem Church Road in Poolesville for wires and a tree down. Just minutes later, at 1:42 p.m., a tree fell onto a trailer home at Middlebrook Gardens, located at 19500 Frederick Road near Gunners Branch Road. Occupants were able to exit safely with no injuries reported, but wires were down and power was out.

In Damascus, a tree blocked Hawkins Creamery Road near Hilton Road around 1:49 p.m., with wires also reported down. At 2:07 p.m., a large tree and live wires came down at Tuckerman Lane and Whisperwood Lane, sparking a brush fire and blocking Tuckerman Lane in both directions.

Additional incidents followed shortly after. At 2:15 p.m., a tree and wires were reported down at Peachtree Road and Comus Road. At 2:16 p.m., MCFRS reported several incidents near Tuckerman Lane and Old Georgetown Road involving downed trees and wires, lane blockages, and power outages. A brush fire, believed to have been caused by downed wires, was reported at Tuckerman Lane and Westlake Drive at 2:17 p.m.

An update at 2:22 p.m. detailed a tree striking a trailer at Rembrant Street and Magnolia Way off Frederick Road. While no injuries were reported, power was out and one family was displaced. At 2:24 p.m., a tree fell onto a home near 7400 Glenside Drive in Takoma Park, damaging the roof but causing no injuries. The most recent report at 2:44 p.m. involved a tree, downed wires, and a brush fire at Bayhill Lane and New Hampshire Avenue in Colesville.

Officials urge residents to secure outdoor objects, avoid downed power lines, and use extra caution while driving, especially in high-profile vehicles. Motorists should expect delays in areas where roads remain blocked and are encouraged to use alternate routes when possible.
