Montgomery County Executive Marc Elrich addressed the recent arrests tied to a February street takeover that caused damage to police vehicles and raised safety concerns across the region.
In his weekly update, Elrich pointed back to the overnight car rally that took place early Sunday, Feb. 22, beginning in Prince George’s County before moving into Silver Spring and ultimately converging at East West Highway and Connecticut Avenue. The gathering drew a large crowd and quickly escalated into dangerous activity.
According to Elrich, streets were blocked as drivers performed reckless stunts, creating a chaotic and hazardous environment. At one point, participants surrounded responding officers, and two police vehicles were damaged during the incident. One officer was inside one of the vehicles at the time. Despite the situation, no officers or community members were injured.
Police have since identified three suspects connected to the takeover. One is from Laurel, while the other two are from outside the immediate area. Arrests were made this week following the investigation.
Elrich emphasized the risks associated with these types of events, urging families to discourage participation. He noted that out-of-control driving creates unpredictable and potentially deadly situations for both participants and bystanders.
He also credited the police department for working to limit these gatherings by monitoring social media and anticipating where takeovers may occur. Still, he acknowledged that plans can shift quickly, making it difficult to track every event in real time.
Investigators are continuing efforts to identify and hold accountable those responsible for organizing and promoting these incidents. Officials are also asking the public to report any information about planned or ongoing gatherings, whether observed in person or online.
