College Park Favorite Marathon Deli Sets Opening Date for Montgomery County Location

Marathon Deli is officially bringing its decades-long legacy back to Montgomery County, with the beloved College Park staple set to celebrate the grand opening of its new Kensington location on Friday, May 8 at 5pm.

The new restaurant, located at 10619 Connecticut Avenue in the Crossroads at Kensington shopping center, marks a major milestone for the family-run business as it opens its only current location outside of College Park.

Founded in 1972, Marathon Deli has built a loyal following over more than five decades, becoming a go-to spot for University of Maryland students and locals alike. Known for its authentic Greek specialties and classic deli fare, the menu features favorites like gyros, souvlaki, spanakopita, and baklava, along with subs, pizzas, and its well-known fries topped with the signature “Marathon sauce.”

The expansion into Kensington has been in the works for some time. We first reported plans for the new location in June 2023, when Marathon Deli initially signed on to join the Crossroads at Kensington at the corner of Connecticut Avenue and Plyers Mill Road. After navigating the planning and approval process, the restaurant is now ready to open its doors to a new community.

Marathon Deli is led by owner and chef George Soldatos, a native of Lefkada, Greece, alongside his wife Maria and their son Peter. The family has remained at the heart of the business since its founding, helping maintain the welcoming, community-focused atmosphere that has defined the deli for generations.
