A new chapter is coming to one of downtown Bethesda’s longtime restaurant spaces.
The former Tako Grill location at 4914 Hampden Lane is being redeveloped by a well-known local restaurant group, with plans to introduce two concepts: Sushi Masato and The One Cakes.
The deal was brokered by Danny Rubin of Washington Urban Group, who shared that the incoming operators are behind several established concepts in the region, including Han Palace, Han Spot, China Garden, and Omakase @ Barracks Row.
According to Rubin, the new concept will combine a full-service Japanese dining experience with a dedicated brick-and-mortar location for The One Cakes, a custom cake brand that has built a large online presence. The pairing is expected to bring both a sit-down sushi destination and a dessert-focused retail component to the space.
Tako Grill permanently closed in December 2025, ending a decades-long run in Bethesda. Originally opened in 1988, the restaurant became a staple in the local dining scene. Before relocating to Hampden Lane in 2015, Tako Grill operated for years along Wisconsin Avenue. Its most recent home took over the former Hinode space and remained open for about a decade.
An opening timeline for Sushi Masato and The One Cakes has not yet been announced.
