There are plenty of great places to grab a burger in Montgomery County, and today we’re sharing eleven that have stood out over the years (and a bonus burger that’s outside of MoCo). This list includes a variety of burger styles, and as with anything food-related, not every spot will resonate with everyone. The restaurants below are listed alphabetically and the links will take you to videos or photos of the burgers.
Char’d (Pike & Rose): Char’d officially opened its doors at Pike & Rose in March, marking the brand’s first brick-and-mortar location in Maryland. The restaurant represents a major milestone for the brand, which began as a food truck in Northern Virginia in April 2023 before expanding to Gaithersburg later that year and opening its first brick-and-mortar location at Tysons Galleria. Strong demand from Maryland customers helped drive the decision to open in Montgomery County.
Duke’s Grocery (Potomac): Duke’s Grocery, a London-inspired gastropub, opened its first Montgomery County location in Potomac Village in April 2025. The restaurant brought its signature “Proper Burger” to Maryland, a burger that has consistently ranked among the best in DC and has won multiple “Best Burger in DC” competitions.
Frank’s Burgers (Wheaton): Frank’s Burgers moved to its new location at 11230 Grandview Avenue in Wheaton in October 2023. The family-owned restaurant has become one of Wheaton’s go-to burger spots.
Josh’s Smash Shack (Rockville): Josh’s earned a strong reputation as customers waited in long lines throughout the winter. While the original location recently closed in preparation for a move, a newer, more permanent location has been teased, and the business continues to do pop-ups.
Julii (Pike & Rose): Julii, a French bistro with a Mediterranean touch from the same team behind CAVA, has earned a reputation for a surprise standout… its burger.
OTC Bar & Grille (Olde Towne Gaithersburg): In addition to its popular breakfast items, the family owned shop in the heart of Olde Towne has added popular menu items like a chopped cheese and their tasty smashburger.
Quarry House (Silver Spring): Located at 8401 Georgia Avenue, the tavern is a true Silver Spring institution. The bar’s history runs deep, with its original liquor license dating back to 1934, making it the second oldest in the region behind Hank Dietle’s in North Bethesda. Silver Spring’s beloved Quarry House Tavern has earned a spot on Eater DC’s list of “Great Places For Live Music and Food in D.C.”
SOKO (Takoma Park): SOKO Butcher, a neighborhood butchery that opened at 7306 Carroll Avenue in Takoma Park in 2022 and has since expanded, serves a burger that many believe rivals its incredibly popular cheesesteak.
Steeze Burger (Gaithersburg): Steeze Burger is moving closer to opening its first brick-and-mortar location. Founded by Laytonsville resident Hunter Karametos, Steeze Burger began as a pop-up in 2022 and gained regional recognition after being named the top burger in the DC area by The Washington Post in 2023. The popular burger concept plans to open at 12141 Darnestown Road in the Shops at Potomac Valley shopping center in Gaithersburg, with hopes of opening by the end of spring 2026.
Sunshine General Store (Brookeville): Many Montgomery County residents are already familiar with the burgers coming out of Sunshine General Store in Brookeville. The longtime local favorite recently received statewide recognition when Tasting Table named the Sunshine Burger the “Absolute Best Burger” in Maryland.
White’s Ferry Grill (Dickerson): White’s Ferry Grill continues to operate despite White’s Ferry ceasing operations. In 2019, Devin Ramazon and his father saw that the White’s Ferry Store & Grill building was available for lease. Neither had been involved in the restaurant business before, but they knew how to make a good burger and decided to take a chance.
*Bonus* Backslash Burger in Frederick: Backslash Burger in Frederick was created by Montgomery County native Jon Thompson as Fifty Fifty before rebranding earlier this year. Thompson, a Clarksburg High School graduate, began his restaurant career at age 16 at Outback Steakhouse in Germantown. Over the next decade, he worked at 14 different Outback locations before later gaining experience at Cafe Deluxe in Rio and serving as general manager of Growlers in Olde Towne Gaithersburg. Backslash Burger, known for its half-beef, half-bacon patties, is frequently part of the conversation for best burger in Maryland.
