Plans Submitted for Upcoming Drive-Thru Starbucks

Plans have officially been submitted to convert the former SunTrust/Truist bank building at Germantown Square Shopping Center into a new Starbucks with a drive-thru.

According to planning documents submitted to Montgomery County, the proposal would redevelop the existing standalone bank building at 12651 Wisteria Drive, located at the intersection of Wisteria Drive and Great Seneca Highway (MD 119). More than two years ago, we first reported that Starbucks was expected to take over the former bank space at the shopping center.

The newly submitted site plan amendment states that the project would not add any additional building square footage, but would instead reconfigure portions of the existing site to accommodate a drive-thru lane and other upgrades.

The newly submitted site plan amendment states that the project would not add any additional building square footage, but would instead reconfigure portions of the existing site to accommodate a drive-thru lane and other upgrades. Proposed changes include:

  • Reconfiguring portions of the parking lot for the drive-thru lane
  • Adding new landscaped parking islands and green space
  • Creating an outdoor patio for customers
  • Adding a dumpster enclosure
  • Removing a net total of 11 parking spaces to accommodate the improvements

Germantown Square is home to businesses including Lancaster County Dutch Market, Dollar General, Super Chicken, and more. The shopping center has also seen several recent tenant changes. America’s Best Wings recently opened at 12619-L Wisteria Drive, next to Mattress Warehouse, in the space formerly occupied by Three Point Cycles. Meanwhile, Outback Steakhouse closed its longtime Germantown restaurant at 12609 Wisteria Drive in February 2024 after more than 30 years in business. An opening timeframe for Starbucks is not yet available.
