MoCo Show Kitchen: UppityBrunch
Today we’ll be making a dish from Silver Spring native Shana E. Bailey’s new book UppityBrunch: Create a Five Star Brunch at Home.
Shana describes an UppityBrunch as a “swanky, late morning to afternoon, upscale and fun dining experience involving a plethora of food choices ranging from charcuterie to delectable cuisines, paired with your perfectly-adorned cocktails in a fabulous setting filled with your family and friends.”
In addition to the recipes inside of the book, Shana also details her journey after being diagnosed with Stage II thyroid cancer while attending Howard University at the age of 20.
UppityBrunch is full of beautiful photographs and also has sections on proper table setting and a portion dedicated to family.

The recipe above is for making 8-10 servings. It lists sugar as being optional, but with all the different spices, the sugar helps balance everything out as well as helping to caramelize the onions and garlic.

Prep time is only 5-10 minutes (depending on how many potatoes you are peeling) and total cook time was 20 minutes. I served mine with sunny side up eggs and avocado.
The potatoes were delicious and the book features 22 additional recipes, including buttermilk waffles, plantain pastries, cornmeal porridge, and kale & collards. There is even a section devoted entirely to brunch cocktails.
Post pandemic, 1310 Kitchen & Bar at 1310 Wisconsin Ave in Georgetown plans to host UppityBrunch events with Shana.
