Maryland Cheesesteak Lands on Beli’s List of the 12 Best in America

A Maryland cheesesteak shop has earned national recognition, landing on Beli’s newly released list of the 12 best cheesesteaks in the United States.

Frank’s Pizza & Pasta, located at 6620 Belair Road in Baltimore, was ranked No. 12 on the list and was the only Maryland restaurant included. Beli is a popular restaurant-ranking app that helps users discover and track restaurants while publishing curated lists of top dining destinations across the country.

The rankings were heavily dominated by Philadelphia-area establishments, with five of the top 12 spots located in Philadelphia itself. The top spot went to Angelo’s Pizzeria in Philadelphia, followed by Danny & Coop’s in New York City and Matu in Beverly Hills. Other notable entries included Barclay Prime ($140 cheesesteak!), Del Rossi’s, Cafe Carmela, and Johnny’s Pizza, all from Pennsylvania.

The recognition adds to a growing list of accolades for Frank’s. Last year, Barstool Sports founder Dave Portnoy visited the restaurant and sampled both its pizza and cheesesteak. Using his well-known “One Bite” rating system, Portnoy awarded the cheesesteak a 9.0 score and gave the New York-style cheese pizza an 8.3. Following the review, customers reportedly began lining up before opening to try the restaurant’s food for themselves.

When we visited Frank’s after Portnoy’s review, we found the cheesesteak lived up to the hype. Established in 1985, Frank’s has become one of Baltimore’s most celebrated pizza destinations, earning recognition as Baltimore’s Best Pizza in both 2023 and 2024 by Baltimore Magazine and The Baltimore Sun. The restaurant’s cheesesteaks can be ordered “Philly style” with hand-sliced ribeye and Cooper Sharp American cheese, or “Baltimore style” with additional toppings including lettuce, tomato, and mayonnaise.

The family-owned restaurant has been operated by brothers Gerry and Daniel since they purchased it from their parents during the pandemic. In addition to its nationally recognized cheesesteaks, Frank’s serves New York and Detroit-style pizzas, pasta dishes, calzones, stromboli, and subs.
