More than 40 local children spent the day climbing, swinging, shooting, kicking, and learning during The DICK’S Sporting Goods Foundation Sports Matter Day of Play event held at the new DICK’S House of Sport at Rio in Gaithersburg.
The event brought together youth from Hope Grow Developmental Center and Minds In Motion Child Care Center through a partnership between DICK’S House of Sport and the 480 Club, led by Montgomery County youth advocate Coach Joseph Hooks.
Throughout the day, participants rotated through a variety of interactive sports stations, giving them the opportunity to try new activities, build confidence, and stay active. The stations included rock climbing, batting cages, golf, basketball, and soccer. The event also featured lunch from Chick-fil-A and goody bags for participating youth.
A key part of the day was the involvement of nine student-athlete mentors from Clarksburg High School and Northwest High School. The students volunteered their time to assist younger participants, serve as role models, and help guide activities throughout the event.
“The student-athlete mentors were incredible,” said Coach Joseph Hooks. “They demonstrated leadership, patience, and a commitment to giving back. Events like this not only impact the children participating, but also help develop the next generation of community leaders.”
The day concluded with a surprise announcement as The DICK’S Sporting Goods Foundation presented a $20,000 donation to 480 Cares Inc., the nonprofit arm of the 480 Club. According to organizers, the funding will help expand youth development programs, increase access to sports and enrichment opportunities, and support local families throughout the region.
“We are incredibly thankful to Alesha Cruz and the entire DICK’S House of Sport team for believing in our mission and helping us create memorable experiences for local youth,” Hooks said. “This partnership demonstrates what is possible when businesses and community organizations work together to remove barriers and create opportunities.”
The Sports Matter initiative focuses on ensuring every child has access to the benefits of sports regardless of their background or circumstances. Organizers said the event was about much more than athletics, creating opportunities for mentorship, teamwork, confidence building, and community connection.
