The Washington Commanders announced Thursday that the franchise will retire Pro Football Hall of Famer John Riggins’ iconic No. 44 jersey during a special ceremony on Sunday, November 8.
The announcement recognizes one of the most accomplished and beloved players in franchise history. Riggins helped lead the Washington Redskins through one of its greatest eras, highlighted by a victory in Super Bowl XVII, where he earned MVP honors after rushing for a then-Super Bowl record 166 yards, including his unforgettable 43-yard touchdown run on fourth-and-one against the Miami Dolphins.
In a statement announcing the honor, Commanders Managing Partner Josh Harris said Riggins’ impact extends well beyond his accomplishments on the field. “There are certain players whose impact goes far beyond statistics, championships and accolades; they become woven into the identity of a franchise,” Harris said. “John Riggins is one of those players.”
Harris praised Riggins for helping define one of the most successful periods in team history, noting that his physical style of play, fearless attitude and larger-than-life personality inspired teammates and captivated generations of fans.
Beyond his Super Bowl MVP award, Riggins was a First-Team All-Pro selection, a two-time NFL rushing touchdown leader, a member of the NFL’s 1980s All-Decade Team and was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1992. “Our fans not only admired him, they identified with him,” Harris said. “He is authentic, unapologetically himself and deeply connected to the people around him.”
The retirement of No. 44 will permanently cement Riggins’ place in franchise history, honoring a player whose legacy remains synonymous with one of Washington’s most memorable championship teams. The ceremony honoring Riggins will take place during the Commanders’ November 8 home game.
