The Washington Spirit climbed to the top of the NWSL standings Sunday night with a 2-1 victory over Boston Legacy FC on the road.
Defender Tara Rudd opened the scoring in the 25th minute, heading home a cross from Leicy Santos for her first regular season NWSL goal since 2024. Just six minutes later, Trinity Rodman doubled Washington’s lead after finishing a through ball from Gift Monday. The goal was Rodman’s seventh of the season.
The Spirit controlled much of the first half, holding Boston without a shot on target before halftime.
Boston increased the pressure in the second half, forcing several key saves from goalkeeper Sandy MacIver to preserve the two-goal advantage. Legacy FC finally broke through in the 88th minute when Sammy Smith scored to cut the deficit to 2-1, but Washington held on through stoppage time to secure the win.
The victory gives the Spirit its ninth win of the season and moves the club into first place in the NWSL standings. Washington returns to Audi Field on Sunday, July 26, to host expansion club Denver Summit FC. Kickoff is scheduled for 7pm.
