The historic former Silver Spring Post Office building at 8412 Georgia Avenue in Downtown Silver Spring has been sold for nearly $3 million.
According to Maryland Newsletters, citing a deed filed in Montgomery County Land Records, Crescent Moon Property LLC, headed by Silver Spring-based Mitchell Herman, purchased the property for $2.975 million from a Douglas Development partnership. Public real estate records show the sale closed on June 30, 2026, for $2.975 million. The sale ends a roughly 35-year period of ownership by the Douglas Development partnership.
The historic building includes approximately 5,645 SF on its main level and an additional 5,609 SF on the lower level. The property originally served as the Silver Spring Post Office and dates to the 1930s. Montgomery County documents identify 8412 Georgia Avenue as the site of the 1937 Silver Spring Post Office.
The building has housed a variety of tenants since its days as a post office. Its most recent tenant was Unleashed by Petco, which opened at the location in 2015 and closed in January 2022 after nearly seven years in the space. The property was subsequently marketed for lease, with both the main and lower levels available.
While there has been no announcement regarding the new owner’s plans for the property, there may be some indication that changes are being considered. Montgomery County Historic Preservation Commission documents from June list Mitchell Herman as the applicant for a preliminary consultation involving partial demolition and construction of rear additions at 8412 Georgia Avenue. The property is identified as Master Plan Site #36/11, the Silver Spring Post Office.
