The Washington Commanders have released their first unofficial depth chart of the season (available below), offering an early look at where several position battles stand as the team moves through training camp.
The depth chart includes several positions marked with “OR,” indicating an ongoing competition. Head coach Dan Quinn downplayed the significance of the release, saying the “unofficial depth chart is about as valuable as preseason rankings.” There aren’t many major surprises, but there are several positions and players worth watching:
At quarterback, Jayden Daniels and Marcus Mariota are firmly established as the top two, while Sam Hartman and rookie Athan Kaliakmanis appear to be competing for the third spot. The winner of that battle would likely begin the season on the practice squad and potentially be elevated if there is an injury to Daniels or Mariota.
At wide receiver, Terry McLaurin and Stefon Diggs are listed as the starting outside receivers, with Luke McCaffrey in the slot. Dyami Brown is behind McLaurin, Treylon Burks is behind Diggs, and Jaylin Lane is listed behind McCaffrey. Rookie Antonio Williams is currently third behind Diggs and Burks, but he remains a player to watch as he develops and pushes for opportunities across the receiving corps. Chig Okonkwo and John Bates are listed as the starting tight ends, with Ben Sinnott behind Okonkwo and Colson Yankoff behind Bates.
The offensive line is particularly notable following the injury to Laremy Tunsil. Tunsil remains listed as the starting left tackle on the depth chart, but he is expected to miss a significant portion of the season after suffering a torn triceps in practice. Quinn has confirmed that Brandon Coleman, who started at left tackle as a rookie in 2024, will move back to the position.
That move also brings some clarity to left guard, where Chris Paul had been competing with Coleman and is now positioned to take over the starting job. Nick Allegretti is listed at center, Sam Cosmi at right guard, and second-year lineman Josh Conerly Jr. at right tackle.
Defensively, Washington is expected to operate primarily out of a 3-4 look. Daron Payne, Tim Settle Jr., and Javon Kinlaw are listed as the starting defensive linemen. Deatrich Wise Jr., Jer’Zhan Newton, and Charles Omenihu are behind them.
The starting outside linebackers, who will serve primarily as edge rushers in the defense, are two offseason additions, Odafe Oweh and K’Lavon Chaisson. Rookie Joshua Josephs is listed behind Oweh, while Dorance Armstrong is behind Chaisson. At inside linebacker, first-round pick Sonny Styles is already listed as a starter alongside veteran Frankie Luvu. Leo Chenal and Jordan Magee are currently the second-team linebackers.
In the secondary, Trey Amos and Mike Sainristil are listed as the starting outside cornerbacks, with Amik Robertson in the slot. Rasul Douglas, Fabian Moreau, and Antonio Hamilton Sr. are behind them. Free agent addition Nick Cross is the starting strong safety, while veteran Jeremy Reaves is currently atop the depth chart at free safety. Will Harris is behind Cross, while Quan Martin is behind Reaves.
Special teams features one of the more interesting competitions of camp. Tress Way remains the starting punter, with Matt Haack behind him. Jake Moody and undrafted rookie Drew Stevens are listed with an “OR” at kicker, signaling an ongoing competition. Stevens has impressed this summer, while Moody has also put together a solid camp. Luke McCaffrey currently sits atop the depth chart at kick returner, followed by Jaylin Lane, Dyami Brown, and Jerome Ford. Lane is listed as the top punt returner, followed by McCaffrey, Burks, and Antonio Williams.
The depth chart remains unofficial and is likely to change throughout the preseason, particularly following Tunsil’s injury and as several younger players continue to compete for roster spots and playing time.
