Washington Commanders backup quarterback Marcus Mariota suffered a sprained MCL during Friday’s preseason game against the Miami Dolphins.
ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports that Mariota is expected to miss the remainder of the preseason but should return in time for the regular season. It remains unclear whether he would be available for Week 1 if starter Jayden Daniels were unable to play.
Mariota started eight games and appeared in 11 for Washington last season, going 2-6 as a starter. He threw for 1,695 yards with 10 touchdowns and seven interceptions while adding 297 rushing yards and a touchdown. He also recorded six fumbles.
With Daniels coming off an injury-plagued second season, the Commanders brought Mariota back to provide an experienced option behind their franchise quarterback. Washington’s only other quarterbacks are Sam Hartman and rookie Athan Kaliakmanis, whom the Commanders selected in the seventh round of the 2026 NFL Draft. Both entered the preseason competing for the third quarterback job, making it likely that Washington will add another arm if Mariota’s injury threatens his availability for the regular season.
Jimmy Garoppolo is among the most experienced quarterbacks still available. Retired veterans Russell Wilson and Teddy Bridgewater are other names fans may mention, although either would need to decide to resume his playing career. Detroit placed Bridgewater on the reserve/retired list and would retain his rights, meaning Washington would need to acquire those rights from the Lions.
Jeff Driskel could be another possibility. The veteran has had two previous stints with Washington, most recently joining the team late last season after Mariota suffered an injury.
