The Independent Investigations Division of the Maryland Office of the Attorney General has released body-worn camera footage from a fatal police-involved shooting that occurred July 31 at Fort Washington Park in Prince George’s County.
The man who was fatally shot was previously identified as 30-year-old Alex Charles of Fort Washington. According to a preliminary investigation, officers from the Maryland-National Capital Park Police, Prince George’s County Police Department and U.S. Park Police responded shortly after 6pm to reports of a shooting and a man walking near the river with a gun.
An MNCPP officer encountered Charles near the river and discharged a service weapon, striking him, according to the Attorney General’s Office. Charles was pronounced dead at the scene. Investigators said a handgun was recovered nearby, and no officers were injured.
The Maryland-National Capital Park Police issued a statement supporting the release of the footage, saying transparency helps the public understand what occurred and maintain trust. The department said it would not provide further comment while the Attorney General’s Office continues its investigation.
