Nick’s Diner (11199 Veirs Mill Rd.) in Wheaton served dinner for the first time in its approximately 44-year history on Thursday evening, introducing a Family Dinner Night menu featuring Greek dishes, Mexican selections, comfort-food classics, sandwiches, and desserts (video available below).
Dinner service began at 4:30pm, and the old-school diner was full within the first 15 minutes. The menu included Maryland crab soup, chicken noodle soup, Greek village salad and house salad. Entrées included chicken, steak or shrimp quesadillas, tacos and fajitas, along with pastitsio, Salisbury steak and grilled salmon. Sandwich options included a Cubano, bacon cheeseburger and meatball provolone sub.
Drinks included Southern-style sweet tea and strawberry lemonade, while strawberry streusel cheesecake and chocolate cake were available for dessert. Our very own “Mr. MoCo” Alex Tsironis arrived as dinner service began and tried the Cubano, pastitsio and Salisbury steak platter, along with a strawberry lemonade and strawberry streusel cheesecake.
He shared that each dish held its own, but the biggest surprise was the Cubano, which ended up being his favorite. “I ate most of it before leaving the diner. The remaining food was brought home and quickly devoured by my family.”
Nick’s is a true old-school diner. Customers should not expect carefully styled plates or a modern restaurant atmosphere, but that is a large part of its charm. It is the kind of classic greasy spoon that has become increasingly difficult to find in Montgomery County.
Nick’s Diner is located at the intersection of Veirs Mill Road and University Boulevard. The restaurant operated as Joe’s Diner before the Markopoulos family took it over in 1982. Since then, generations of customers have visited for the old-school feel, tasty food, and cozy atmosphere.
Earlier Thursday, Montgomery County Council President Natali Fani-González presented owner George Markopoulos with a certificate recognizing Nick’s Diner as a longstanding and cherished community establishment. The certificate also commemorated the restaurant’s first Family Dinner Night and recognized its continued contribution to the Wheaton community.
