Washington Commanders punter Tress Way told reporters he believes this will be his final season playing, potentially marking the end of a career spent entirely with Washington in regular season action.
The three-time Pro Bowler enters the season following 12 years with Washington, which claimed him off waivers from Chicago during the 2014 preseason. Way has appeared in 196 career regular season games, tying him for fifth on the franchise’s all-time games played list.
Way holds franchise career records for punt yards (39,031), punting average (46.9 yards), and punts inside the 20-yard line (325). He passed Mike Bragg for the most punt yards in team history during the 2024 season.
His comments come after another standout year. In 2025, Way earned his third Pro Bowl selection after leading the NFL in the percentage of punts downed inside the 20-yard line (52.8%) and opponent average starting field position after punts (17.9-yard line). Washington’s punt unit also led the league in opponent punt return average (4.6 yards) and total opponent punt return yards (114).
Way previously earned Pro Bowl honors following the 2019 and 2022 seasons. He was also named Special Teams Player of the Month for October 2022 after placing an NFL-leading 16 punts inside the 20, five more than the next closest punter.
