A former Sandy Spring Bank administrative building on Georgia Ave could become a permanent home for several Olney civic organizations and the community’s police satellite station.
According to the Olney Chamber of Commerce, the proposed Olney Community Building would provide space for the Officer Noah Leotta Police Satellite Station, the Chamber, the Greater Olney Civic Association, the Olney Civic Fund, Olney Days and other community organizations. The Chamber said Olney has pursued a permanent home for its civic organizations for more than 25 years.
A former Capital One building was previously purchased for use as the community building, but the Chamber believes the former Sandy Spring Bank property offers a more practical and cost-effective option. The organization said the building could accommodate both the community groups and police station under one roof, is essentially ready for occupancy and provides additional parking.
The Chamber established Olney’s existing police trailer in 1998 and continues to support and maintain it. According to the organization, the trailer has reached the end of its useful life and should be replaced with a permanent facility offering safer and more comfortable working conditions for officers.
The Montgomery County Council will hold a public hearing related to the proposal on Tuesday, September 15, at 1:30pm at the Council Office Building in Rockville. Residents may attend the hearing, testify remotely or submit written or prerecorded testimony. Registration closes Monday, September 14, at 2pm.
