The Washington Commanders are introducing “Spike the Spear” as a recurring gameday tradition at Northwest Stadium this season, with Washington legends, celebrities, and local sports icons participating in the ceremonial moment before kickoff.
The ritual will conclude “The Show,” the team’s 18-minute pregame sequence featuring live entertainment, special effects, cinematic videos, and more. According to the Commanders, the spear ceremony will signify that “the battle has begun” and usher in the game.
Washington legend Darrell Green participated in the first-ever Spike the Spear moment last season, providing a preview of what the team is now establishing as a regular part of its home gameday experience.
Throughout the season, participants will include special guests with meaningful connections to the Commanders organization and the greater DMV community. The announcement did not identify the upcoming participants.
The Commanders describe the spear as a connection between the franchise’s history and its current identity, referencing its appearance on Washington’s helmets in earlier eras and its role in the organization’s developing warrior-themed imagery.
The announcement follows another visible branding development covered in our February article, when the team debuted a shield design featuring its familiar “W” at the center and two crossed spears.
That imagery aligned with comments team owner Josh Harris made during an October appearance on The Varsity with John Ourand podcast. Harris described Commanders as “leaders of warriors” and pointed to swords and spears as recurring elements in the team’s branding direction. He also highlighted Green’s ceremonial spear slam as an example of how that identity was being incorporated into the team’s on-field presentation.
During the interview, Harris reiterated that the organization was committed to its current name. “We’re embracing the Commanders name, and we’re staying with it,” Harris said.
