Australia-based Leon’s Smashburgers is returning to the U.S. for another Montgomery County collaboration with Steeze Burger, which opened its first brick and mortar restaurant earlier this year. Steeze Burger has previously been named the best burger in the DMV by the Washington Post.
The two burger concepts will hold a pop-up at The Family Room in Laytonsville on Friday, October 2, beginning at 5pm. The event will feature double smash burgers from both Leon’s and Steeze, along with ice cream from The Family Room.
Leon’s Smashburgers was founded by Leone Catalano in Melbourne, Australia. Catalano has traveled extensively throughout the United States since 2012 and lived in the country during 2022 and 2023 while immersing himself in American burger culture.
Steeze Burger was founded in 2022 by Laytonsville resident Hunter Karametos, who sampled more than 150 burgers while researching his own version before launching the pop-up business. Steeze has since developed a local following and has previously been recognized by The Washington Post for its burgers.
This won’t be the first time Leon’s and Steeze have teamed up in Montgomery County. During Leon’s previous visit to the U.S., the two held pop-ups at Westside at Shady Grove and Two Story Chimney in the Gaithersburg/Damascus area. Both events drew burger fans from around the region.
Steeze Burger’s double cheeseburger has earned a spot on The Washington Post’s list of the “40 Essential Dishes of D.C.,” highlighting standout selections from restaurants across Washington, DC, Maryland and Northern Virginia. The October 2 pop-up will take place at The Family Room, located at 6820 Olney Laytonsville Rd in Laytonsville. The event begins at 5pm.
