The Washington Commanders are signing Montgomery County native Charles Snowden to their practice squad, bringing the veteran defensive end/linebacker back to his home area. CBS Sports’ Matt Zenitz reported that Snowden is initially joining the practice squad, with the expectation that he could eventually be added to the active roster. Snowden visited with Washington on Tuesday.
Snowden, a Silver Spring native, began his high school career at Blake High School, where he played basketball and junior varsity football, before transferring to St. Albans School in Washington, DC. The 6’6 defender went on to play at the University of Virginia before signing with the Chicago Bears as an undrafted free agent in 2021.
As we reported at the time, Snowden impressed during his first NFL preseason with six tackles and two sacks across three games. He spent much of his rookie season on Chicago’s practice squad before making his regular-season debut in December 2021.
Snowden later joined the Las Vegas Raiders, where he developed into a more significant part of the defense. He appeared in 31 games over the 2024 and 2025 seasons and made 18 starts. In 2025, Snowden recorded his first NFL interception, picking off a pass for an 18-yard return against the Cleveland Browns in November.
Snowden re-signed with Las Vegas in April 2025 before eventually joining the Dallas Cowboys on June 18, 2026. In July, he was suspended for the first three games of the 2026 season stemming from a 2024 DUI arrest. Dallas waived Snowden with an injury designation on August 2.
Now 28, Snowden is getting an opportunity with his hometown NFL team. Washington’s move comes as the Commanders deal with injuries on defense, including a season-ending neck injury suffered by linebacker Leo Chenal.
