Town of Poolesville Unveils New Flag

The Town of Poolesville has a new flag following a redesign process that began in late 2025.

According to the town, the Poolesville Town Commissioners decided to replace the previous flag with a design that more closely follows modern flag-design principles. Commissioners directed that the new flag incorporate three themes representing Poolesville: community, education, and agriculture.

The redesign followed guidelines from the North American Vexillological Association’s “Good Flag, Bad Flag” handbook. Its five basic principles call for flags to be simple, feature meaningful symbolism, use two or three basic colors, avoid lettering and seals, and be distinctive or related to other flags.

The commissioners appointed a committee of volunteers and hired a graphic designer to develop the new design. Committee members included Dorthy Ballmann, Judy McKenney, Sarah Lamanna, Thomas Kettler, and Annette Howard.

Poolesville’s previous flag was developed many years ago and featured lettering and a more complex central design. According to the town, the redesign provided an opportunity to create a flag that more simply and effectively represents Poolesville and its community.
