World Cup Legend Takes on New Challenge With Help From Rockville Golf Instructor

Briana Scurry, the legendary goalkeeper who helped lead the United States to victory in the 1999 FIFA Women’s World Cup, is taking on a new challenge with help from one of the country’s top golf instructors, based right here in Montgomery County.

Scurry, a two-time Olympic gold medalist and member of the National Soccer Hall of Fame, is starring in Breaking 99, a new LPGA instructional series that follows her attempt to break 99 in an 18-hole round of golf before the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup begins next June. The goal is a tribute to her former teammates on the historic 1999 championship team, commonly known as the ’99ers.

Helping Scurry make the transition from soccer to golf is Trillium Rose, director of instruction at Woodmont Country Club in Rockville. Rose has been recognized as one of Golf Digest’s 50 Best Teachers in America for 2026-27, along with earning spots on the LPGA’s Top 50 Teachers in America and Golf Magazine’s Top 100 Teachers in America lists. She has more than 20 years of experience coaching golfers of all skill levels, from beginners to professionals.

The first episode of Breaking 99, presented by Gainbridge, premieres Tuesday, November 10, on the LPGA’s official YouTube channel and LPGA.com. It features Scurry’s first lessons with Rose at Woodmont Country Club, along with a behind-the-scenes look at her club fitting with Titleist and a special FaceTime conversation with golf legend Annika Sorenstam.

“I’ve always loved a challenge. It’s what drove me throughout my soccer career, and that competitive spirit hasn’t gone anywhere,” Scurry said. “I’m excited to take on a new sport with the goal of breaking 99 in honor of the ‘99ers ahead of the 2027 Women’s World Cup.”

Scurry is best remembered for her performance during the 1999 Women’s World Cup final against China, when she made a crucial save during the penalty shootout that helped secure the United States’ championship. Now, more than 25 years later, she’s experiencing what it’s like to be a beginner again, this time with a golf club instead of goalkeeper gloves.

“Working with Briana Scurry, someone who knows what it takes to reach the top of her sport, is a rare and rewarding opportunity,” Rose said. “She has that experience grinding through setbacks. Taking risks and getting through the hard parts is what you hope every student has, and a two-time Olympic gold medalist definitely has it.”

Scurry’s interest in golf grew after participating in The ANNIKA tournament in Florida in 2025, when she served as a celebrity guest caddie for WNBA star Caitlin Clark, hit a celebrity tee shot, and spent time on the course with world No. 1 golfer Nelly Korda.

Scurry and Rose are scheduled to participate together in The ANNIKA’s Pro-Am at Pelican Golf Club in Belleair, Florida, on Monday, November 9. Cameras will document Scurry’s progress during the round for the series’ second episode.

Additional episodes of Breaking 99 will be released through June 2027, following Scurry’s progress toward her goal. The series will be available on the LPGA’s YouTube channel and website, giving viewers a chance to follow the soccer legend’s golf journey, which began with lessons at Woodmont Country Club in Rockville.
