The founder of Everything Frederick, a Facebook group with more than 156,000 members, has announced that she is stepping away from overseeing the popular community platform and transferring its leadership to Caring Hearts, a Frederick County nonprofit organization.
Shannon Flannery, who founded Everything Frederick in 2020, shared the decision in an emotional letter to members, explaining that the group was originally created to connect neighbors, support small businesses, promote nonprofits, and strengthen the Frederick County community.
Over the past six years, the group has grown into a major online gathering place for local residents, businesses, and organizations. In her announcement, Flannery said the group’s growth has also brought years of personal challenges, including online harassment, rumors, threats, and disputes surrounding her decision to trademark the Everything Frederick name. She stated that she had received a death threat serious enough to seek a peace order and had faced threats of litigation.
She also addressed accusations that she had profited from the group’s popularity, stating that she has never made money from Everything Frederick and had no intention of turning it into a business. Rather than attempting to sell the group or continuing to manage it herself, Flannery announced that she has decided to entrust it to Caring Hearts, a nonprofit that provides food, clothing, holiday meals, and other assistance to families throughout Frederick County.
According to Flannery, the group will retain its name and continue serving the same purpose, with the nonprofit taking over its leadership. She emphasized that her decision was not an admission of wrongdoing but an effort to prevent the controversy surrounding her from overshadowing the group’s community mission. “Sometimes loving something means knowing when to place it in someone else’s hands so it can continue to grow,” she wrote.
Shannon concluded by thanking the members who supported the group over the years and expressing pride in what the community had built together. “Everything Frederick was never about me. It was always about all of you.”
