Police Will Release Body Cam Footage From July 17th Officer Involved Shooting at Gaithersburg McDonald’s
Montgomery County Police held a press conference this evening to discuss details of the officer involved shooting at the McDonald’s located at 18273 Flower Hill Way in Gaithersburg that occurred Friday around 10pm. They announced that the man shot in the incident was named Ryan LeRoux, 21, of Gaithersburg.
Police Chief Marcus Jones said that the body cam footage will be released after all relevant parties have seen the footage. Detectives met with the family of LeRoux and they have seen the footage. Jones noted that body worn cameras are a useful tool but do not replace the human eye of officer.
Other notes:
-Jones says that the officers on the scene ordered LeRoux to leave his vehicle, and spent 30 minutes trying to talk him out.
-A negotiator was called to the scene but arrived after LeRoux was shot.
-While waiting for the negotiator, officers formulated an arrest plan for a peaceful solution.
-At one point they were able to contact on his cellphone and they tried to convince him to exit the vehicle.
-Just prior to negotiators arrival, there was use of force which resulted in his death.
-LeRoux had a loaded glock in the vehicle.
-The involved officers have been placed on administrative leave, which is standard procedure. This is a criminal investigation, as are all officer involved shootings.
-Jones thanked the first responders who were at the scene.
-County Executive Marc Elrich was also on hand for the press conference.
