Meadowbrook Stables in Chevy Chase reports over 40 horses ill

Meadowbrook Stables in Chevy Chase, a stable that offers hunter/jumper/equitation instruction for children and adults, has reported that over 40 of its horses developed neurological symptoms due to Equine Herpes Virus (EHV).
Meadowbrook was made aware of the outbreak in its stables after losing a pony to the virus on March 10th. They have created a GoFundMe explaining what has occurred and measures Meadowbrook will be taking to treat its horses and contain the virus. So far the GoFundMe has risen over $31,000 of its $85,000 goal.
It can be seen below:
Equine Herpes Virus (EHV) is an extremely contagious virus that, in most cases, only causes mild flu-like symptoms in horses. However, the virus can mutate and cause neurological symptoms such as loss of balance, stumbling and, in extreme cases, even death. Tragically, we lost our dear pony, River, to the virus on March 10, 2022.
Over 40 of our other horses subsequently developed neurological symptoms, although fortunately, most of these are mild to moderate cases being treated by our staff on site. They are resting, and we’re optimistic that most of them will make a full recovery over the next four to six weeks.
What measures is Meadowbrook taking to treat its horses and contain the virus? Meadowbrook has been following strict testing, quarantine, treatment, and biosecurity protocols, including:
  • Putting up 24 temporary stalls in the indoor arena to quarantine horses with moderate symptoms and separated all horses in the main barn.
  • Working closely with our treating veterinarian and scheduling two sets of staff to work round the clock to monitor and assess each horse’s symptoms, including taking temperatures and performing regular neurological exams; administering three types of medications twice daily, per horse; disinfecting stalls, buckets and equipment; and hand walking horses.
  • Canceling lessons and closing Meadowbrook to reduce stress on the horses and promote their recovery.
  • Canceling horse shows and keeping all horses on site to ensure there’s no transmission to other stables.
How will this impact Meadowbrook? The expenses from Meadowbrook’s EHV quarantine and response will be over $85,000. Estimated costs include the following:
  • $18,000 in antiviral and other medications
  • $35,000 in veterinary bills
  • $8,580 to set up temporary quarantine stalls in the indoor ring
  • $25,000 to cover the additional staffing needed to provide round-the-clock care for the horses
  • $1,000 in biomedical and other supplies
Here’s what you can do to help. Please donate to help Meadowbrook cover veterinary expenses – including daily exams and medications – associated with the EHV outbreak. Meadowbrook is a 501(c)(3) organization and all gifts are tax-deductible to the full extent of the law.
