Two MCPS Schools Make Top 200 of U.S. News & World Report’s 2022 ‘Best U.S. High School’ Rankings

Over the weekend we let you know of MCPS high schools faring well on Niche’s ‘Best Public High Schools in Maryland’ rankings. Now, two MCPS high schools have made the top 200 of U.S. News & World Report’s 2022 ‘Best U.S. High Schools’ rankings.

Walt Whitman High School in Bethesda came in the highest of all Maryland public high schools, coming in at 104. Thomas S. Wootton High School in Rockville came in at 167 nationally. Nearly 18,000 schools were ranked by U.S. News & World Report. Poolesville High School, Winston Churchill High School, and Bethesda-Chevy Chase High School we’re all ranked in the top 500 of the list.

When it came to the U.S. News & World Report’s Maryland public high school rankings, Whitman and Wootton came in at 1 and 2, with Poolesville (4), Churchill (5), B-CC (8), and Richard Montgomery (9) also in the top 10. Walter Johnson came in at 15, Northwest at 18, and Quince Orchard at 25 rounded up MCPS schools in the top 25.

How does U.S. News & World Report create its rankings?

  1. College Readiness 30%

The proportions of 12th graders who took and earned a qualifying score on at least one AP or IB exam. Earning a qualifying score is worth three times more than just taking.

  2. State Assessment Proficiency 20%

Aggregated scores on state assessments that students may be required to pass for graduation.

  3. State Assessment Performance 20%

How aggregated scores on state assessments compare with U.S. News’ expectations given the proportions of students who are Black, Hispanic and from low-income households.

  4. Underserved Student Performance 10%

Scores on state assessments aggregated just among students who are Black, Hispanic and from low-income households. These scores are compared with what is typical in the state for non-undeserved students, with parity or higher being the goal.

  5. College Curriculum Breadth 10%

The proportions of 12th graders who took and earned a qualifying score on AP and IB exams in multiple areas. More exams are valued more than fewer exams up to a maximum of four. Earning a qualifying score on an exam is worth three times more than taking.

  6. Graduation Rate 10%

The proportion of entering ninth graders who graduated four academic years later.
