Montgomery Parks has announced its May line-up of special events. From unique Mother’s Day activities to salsa and yoga in the parks to archaeological adventure and spending a day at the splash park, there’s fun for the whole family this May at Montgomery Parks.

Salsa in the Park | Thursday, May 5 | North Four Corners Local Park
Whether you’re a salsa pro, beginner, or just a lover of live music, join Montgomery Parks for the third event of the Salsa in the Park series at North Four Corners Local Park from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Free admission!
Get a free salsa lesson and dance to live music. Craft beer and authentic Latin food will be available for purchase. Representatives from local Montgomery County community organizations will also be on hand.
Native Plant Sale | Saturday and Sunday, May 7 – 8 | Locust Grove Nature Center
Beautify your backyard with native plants! Visit Locust Grove Nature Center and ask the experts your questions about growing low-maintenance and pest-resistant varieties that help attract wildlife to your garden. Shop a unique selection of the highest quality plants and seeds. The Native Plant Sale is an in-person event.
Mother’s Day Skates | Sunday, May 8 | Cabin John Ice Rink and Wheaton Ice Arena
Celebrate your mom at Wheaton Ice Arenaor Cabin John Ice Rink! Moms skate free with one paid admission at Cabin John from 12:30 p.m. – 2:00 p.m. and at Wheaton from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.
Mother’s Day Hike and Craft | Saturday, May 7 | Maydale Nature Classroom
Join the fun from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at Maydale Nature Classroom for Mother’s Day Hike and Craft. Learn how animals take care of their young in the wild. Also, look for treasures on a short hike and use them to make a special gift for Mother’s Day! Intended for ages 3 and older. Fee: $6.
Archaeology Day | Saturday, May 7 | Rock Creek Regional Park
Join us at Needwood Mansion for Archaeology Day on Saturday, May 7, 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., and do a simulated archaeological dig. Identify seeds and mend ceramics. Make clay marbles, and a clay pot, and try tinsmithing and weaving. Play tug of war and join a sack race. Throw a spear with an atlatl. Construct a wikiup. See a Civil War doctor or visit with a Union soldier. Discover ways Indigenous people lived in the pre-colonial era. Check out discoveries in the archaeological displays. A food truck will be onsite. Free admission!
Yoga in the Park| Saturday, May 7 and 14 | Josiah Henson Museum and Park
In celebration of Mental Health Awareness Month, join us for Yoga in the Park at the Josiah Henson Museum and Park on Saturday, May 7, and 14 from 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. Just bring a yoga mat and enjoy the beauty of nature and the gift of mindfulness. Free program!
Drag Queen Story Hour | Saturday, May 21 | Brookside Gardens
Drag Queen Story Hour with Citrine(DQSH) is just what it sounds like—drag queens reading stories to children in libraries, schools, and bookstores. DQSH captures the imagination and play of the gender fluidity of childhood and provides kids with glamorous, positive, and unabashedly queer role models. Montgomery Parks Playhouse and Playhouse Jr. Series | Starts May 19
Enjoy performing arts outdoors at parks across the county with the new Montgomery Parks Playhouse and Parks Playhouse Jr. series. Performances take place throughout the summer and will feature live music, comedy, spoken word poetry, theater, and puppet shows. Many of the events feature local artists. Performances are free!
Summer Season Water Fun | Opens Saturday, May 28
The unofficial start of summer begins! Row or paddle on Lake Needwood, Rock Creek Regional Park, or on Little Seneca Lake,Black Hill Regional Park. Cool off or play a round of putt-putt at the South Germantown SplashPark and Mini-Golf.
