Final Escalator Replacement Underway at Silver Spring Station

Update: Another escalator replacement was completed at Silver Spring Station earlier this week. The final escalator replacement at the station is now underway.

History: On September 6, 2022, Metro began a major capital project replacing the five entrance escalators at Silver Spring Station. All five escalators will be replaced with brand-new ones that are more durable and reliable. Metro’s contractor KONE will install the escalators as part of an ongoing project to replace 130 escalators across the Metrorail system by 2028, helping to ensure the regional infrastructure remains in a state of good repair.

How will this work affect my trip? The north entrance, on the north side of Colesville Road, will be closed for approximately four months. During the closure, the escalators at the north entrance will be replaced. The south entrance to the Metro Station, across Colesville Road, will remain open. The station elevator is located at the south entrance and will remain open throughout construction.

Once the north entrance reopens, escalators at the south entrance will be replaced one at a time. The south entrance will remain open during the construction. How long will the project take?

The replacement of the escalators at the north entrance is expected to take approximately four months for site preparation, demolition, construction, installation and testing. The replacement of the escalators at the south entrance, which will be undertaken one at a time, will take an additional 11 months.
