Earlier today we reported that Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Services (MCFRS) responded to a fire at the iconic Gene’s Costumes on the 10600 block of Connecticut Ave in Kensington. We now know that damage is estimated to be approximately $100K.

According to MCFRS Chief Spokesperson Pete Piringer, the fire occurred in the basement shortly before noon. The origin/cause was found to be electrical in nature (light ballast) and there were no injuries. Connecticut Ave was temporarily blocked between University Blvd and Plyers Mill Rd. due to continued fire department activity.

Gene’s Costumes is one of the remaining full service rental and retail costume shops in the D.C. Metro area. Unlike big box retailers and online stores, they offer full service and expertise when it comes to costumes, accessories, wigs and more. Customers can try on costumes before purchasing or renting and will never have to wonder if a costume will fit or if it will arrive on time. They have been in business for over 30 years.
