On May 2nd, the Montgomery County Animal Services & Adoption Center (MCASAC) announced it was closed to the public due to an outbreak of Canine Influenza (CIV). On Friday, they shared a few updates in a post on social media:
“We successfully made it through the second week of our Canine Influenza (CIV) outbreak and we’re hoping to share some updates with you all!
Unfortunately, MCASAC still remains closed to the public for the foreseeable future and is only accepting essential intakes. But don’t worry, you can still bring home a furry friend! Animals are available for adoption from foster care, and the best part? Adoption fees are waived!
Since the start of the outbreak, 54 dogs have shown clinical signs of CIV, but we’re thrilled to share that most of these dogs have recovered and are no longer symptomatic! This is great news! However, Canine Influenza Virus can shed for as many as 28 days, so despite recovering, they do need to remain isolated. The good news is that all dogs still showing symptoms are only experiencing mild ones.
This week alone, we have successfully moved 26 animals into loving foster homes and transferred 32 animals to rescue organizations. Thank you so much to everybody who is fostering with us!
Our staff and volunteers continue to be absolute rockstars and are going above and beyond to help not only the dogs in our care, but the animals in the community despite our shift in operations.

Thank you for your continued support and understanding as we navigate through this challenging time. Together, we can ensure the health and safety of all our beloved animals!
** No new dog photos this week, so how about a bird! Joey is an African Grey parrot who was adopted this week. Joey was a fun guy who had a lot to say… most of which we can’t repeat here! Hopefully nobody in Joey’s new home is faint of heart! Happy Tails, Joey!”
