Owner of New Restaurant in Rockville Town Square is Optimistic About The Development’s Future

With plenty of moves being made in Rockville Town Square and the area immediately surrounding it, we spoke with the owner of a business that recently opened in the development who shared why he believes things are already starting to turn around.

Wesley Yao, the co-owner of Kusshi Sushi, has just opened his newest location in the Rockville Town Square space that was home to popular sushi restaurant Sushi Damo at 36G Maryland Ave in for over 15 years. “There has been plenty of foot traffic in Rockville Town Square. I didn’t advertise the soft opening and people who walked by just popped in” Yao said.

He chose to open in the development because he used to hang out at Gordon Biersch “all the time” from 2007-2009. “I was there for happy hour and I was there late nights, so I know both can be successful.” He says his first week has been “awesome” with a combination of familiar faces and support from members of the community who live nearby.

On the future of Rockville Town Square, he said, “Rockville Town Square used to be so busy. I’m hoping we can help bring it back to life and hopefully more tenants fill the few remaining spaces.” He believes Little Miner Taco is going to be a great addition and thinks that a steakhouse and an arcade would also be welcomed additions.

When asked about his favorite current businesses in Rockville Town Square, Yao said, “Right now, I love all the desserts that Kyo Matcha has and I do Finnegans Wake for late night food. I’m looking forward to this upcoming version of the Town Square, I think it will be great.”
