High School Football Top 10 Rankings – Week 1

As the season progresses, teams are beginning to separate themselves, but Week 2 brings challenges that could shake up the rankings. Here’s a look at the top teams after an exciting opening weekend:

1. Northwest Jaguars (1-0) | Last Week: 1: The reigning No. 1 stays put after an emphatic 70-0 drubbing of Watkins Mill. The Jaguars dominated on both sides of the ball, running for over 200 yards and forcing four turnovers on defense. Their depth and physicality were on full display, but a much tougher test awaits. This week’s trip to Damascus will give us a better look at just how powerful Northwest really is. Their explosiveness on offense, combined with a defense that seems to find the ball at every turn, makes them the team to beat.

Up next: at Damascus (1-0)

2. Quince Orchard Cougars (1-0) | Last Week: 2 No surprises here. Quince Orchard handled South County (VA) with ease, coasting to a 54-7 win. The Cougars’ passing game was electric, with wideout Josiah Teasley racking up 114 yards and two touchdowns. As one of the perennial powerhouses, QO looks every bit as dangerous as they have in recent years. A visit to Gaithersburg should be a comfortable next step as they continue their march toward another deep playoff run.

Up next: at Gaithersburg (0-1)

3. Sherwood Warriors (1-0) | Last Week: 5 The Warriors make a leap in the rankings after a statement win against Rockville, 46-8. With 435 yards of total offense, Sherwood looked unstoppable and the defense shut down Rockville from the get-go. A huge earlly season showdown looms as they face Paint Branch in what could be a season-defining game. The stakes couldn’t be higher in this Thursday night clash, which has all the makings of an instant classic. MoCoShow Game of the Week!

Up next: vs. Paint Branch (0-1)

4. Paint Branch Panthers (0-1*) | Last Week: 4: Despite a forfeit loss on the record, Paint Branch remains in the Top 5. The Panthers were one of the preseason favorites, and they’ll finally get their season underway against a surging Sherwood squad. This team is hungry, and you can bet they’ll be looking to prove they belong in the upper echelon of the rankings. Their defense will be tested early and often by Sherwood’s high-powered attack. MoCoShow Game of the Week!

Up next: at Sherwood (1-0)

5. Damascus Hornets (1-0) | Last Week: 7: It wasn’t pretty, but a win’s a win. Damascus scrapped their way to a 14-0 victory over Einstein, with Michael Cooley leading the way on the ground with 175 yards and two touchdowns. The Hornets’ defense stood tall, pitching a shutout, but they’ll need an even bigger effort with Northwest coming to town. This game could set the tone for the rest of their season. The rivalry between these two programs always brings fireworks.

Up next: vs. Northwest (1-0)

6. Blake Bengals (1-0) | Last Week: 8: Blake climbs the ranks after a hard-fought 28-14 victory over Whitman. QB Kirby Matson was spectacular, throwing for 291 yards and three touchdowns, helping the Bengals pull away late. Blake’s offense looks dangerous, but they’ll need to avoid a letdown against Kennedy. Given their recent form, Blake should take care of business, but underestimating an opponent has tripped up many talented teams before.

Up next: vs. Kennedy (0-1)

7. Seneca Valley Screaming Eagles (1-0) | Last Week: NR: Welcome back, Seneca Valley!!! After pulling off an impressive 14-10 upset of Churchill, the Screaming Eagles make their debut in the Top 10. Their defense was the key to the victory, forcing three critical turnovers. Seneca Valley looks like a team that could surprise this season, especially if their defense continues to play at this level. Blair comes to town next, and the Eagles will look to build on the momentum.

Up next: vs. Blair (0-1)

8. Churchill Bulldogs (0-1) | Last Week: 3: A tough Week 1 loss drops Churchill down the rankings. The Bulldogs had their chances against Seneca Valley, but turnovers and offensive struggles led to their downfall. This week’s matchup against BCC is critical if they want to avoid an 0-2 start. With a focused and motivated Barons squad on the other sideline, Churchill must clean up their mistakes if they want to stay in the Top 10.

Up next: at BCC (1-0)

9. Bethesda-Chevy Chase Barons (1-0) | Last Week: 10: The Barons took down their rivals, Walter Johnson, 21-12, to open the season, and they move up a spot in the rankings. RB Gabe Eisler was a force on the ground, rushing for 88 yards and two scores. BCC’s defense held firm when it mattered, and they’ll need more of the same as they prepare for a showdown with Churchill in the Congressional Cup. This game has major implications for both teams, and a win here could vault BCC further up the rankings.

Up next: vs. Churchill (0-1)

10. Walter Johnson Wildcats (0-1) | Last Week: 6: Walter Johnson slips to the edge of the Top 10 after a disappointing loss to BCC. The Wildcats struggled to move the ball, and their defense couldn’t stop BCC’s ground game. They’ll need to regroup quickly with a winnable matchup against Richard Montgomery on the horizon. A loss here would spell major trouble for their season, so expect a focused Wildcats team to take the field on Friday night.

Up next: at Richard Montgomery (0-1)

Just Missed:

  • Blair (1-0): Competitive win vs a strong opponent, but need to show more consistency.
  • Gaithersburg (0-1): Tough matchup against QO this week could define their early season trajectory.

Final Thoughts: Week 2 presents a massive opportunity for teams like Paint Branch, Damascus, and Churchill to make a statement. Meanwhile, Northwest and Quince Orchard look poised to remain at the top, but as always, anything can happen under the Friday night lights.
