Have you wondered about the recent grey skies and dimmer Sun, especially around sunrise and sunset? The West Coast wildfires are to blame as jet streams have carried smoke caused by the fires in California, Oregon and Washington across the country, first hitting our area on Monday.

These past few days have been marked by hazy, grey skies despite little clouds and while the Sun is lower in the sky, it’s even possible to look directly at the Sun, though eye experts still recommend against it. Although to the eye, there has undergone some changes, air quality will not be affected and the smoke is too far above the ground.

Do you recognize this area? This is a map of Montgomery County in 1863. Created by the Bureau of Topographical Engineers and the United States Coast Survey, this map contains the locations of rural households and natural landmarks, like ravines. This carefully crafted image would’ve been used as a general guide to Montgomery County’s landscape and for military purposes.

If you look closely, you can spot familiar names on the map such as Colesville, Poolsville, Rockville, Gaithersburg, Silver Spring, and even Sligo River.
