Bethesda

Nats left fielder Juan Soto was all the talk at North Bethesda Middle School this past week. The 21 year old Soto surprised a group of students in the morning as they waited for their bus. We’re told he is friends with a family whose child attends the school, so he decided to stop by and say hello. Soto took pictures with any student who wanted one (photos below) and gave them an experience they’ll never forget in the process.

Soto signed with the Nationals as an international free agent in 2015. He made his MLB debut in 2018 and was the runner-up for the NL Rookie of the Year Award. In 2019, he was a key part of the Nationals’ first World Series championship. He made his professional debut in 2016 with the Gulf Coast League Nationals in the rookie-level Gulf Coast League and was named the Gulf Coast League MVP after hitting .368 with five home runs and 32 runs batted in (RBIs). In September 2016 he was promoted to the Auburn Doubledays of the Class A-Short Season New York-Penn League for the final few games of the 2016 season. Appearing in six games for the Doubledays, he went 9-for-21 (.429) with three doubles and an RBI. He finished the 2016 season with an overall batting average of .368, five home runs, and 32 RBIs.

Clarksburg

MCPS teacher Maxwell Bero (Clarksburg) has announced his run to seek the nomination for Democratic candidate in Maryland’s 6th Congressional District, challenging incumbent congressman David Trone.

Bero is currently a social studies teacher at Watkins Mill High School in Montgomery Village. “Our current Congress, and our current congressman, is not doing enough to address the problems facing this country,” Bero said. “Issues such as global climate change, the technological revolution, our overburdened education system, and health care, among others, are not being addressed by our current leaders in Washington. I’m tired of sitting on the sidelines hoping for our representatives to step up and do what is necessary. It’s time for a new generation of leadership, who is willing to fight for what’s best for ALL Americans, present, and future.”

Klay will be the third Indian restaurant at that location taking over the spot that was formerly home to The Bukhara just a couple months ago and Aladdin Indian Kitchen a few years back.

Gaithersburg

We were just informed of two impending closures at Lakeforest Mall in Gaithersburg.

Forever 21, the “fast fashion” retailer known for its trendy offerings and low pricing, filed for bankruptcy last month. At the time, the Lakeforest location was the only one of the four MoCo locations that was not listed as one of the stores expected to close.
